Cascade Lakes - April 25th, 2005
RECORDED:    50 °    FISHING: Great

Rain, Sleet, Snow, Hail, Wait...a hint of Sun, Snow flurry, Snow blowing sideways, sleet, drizzle again....Ah yes, Nothing like the weather on the Cascade Lakes opening weekend.  But don't let the weather discourage you if you wanna catch fish.  The BIG FISH are there and they are willing to eat!!

The water is still cold.   The Bass aren't gonna wanna move great distances to attact things.  But if you can locate the fish, they will be aggressive.  When you land a 6+lb Bass in the first 1/2hr of your fishing trip, you know your fishing the right spots.

The Trout are gonna be somewhat lethargic still but will be receptive to most flies and lures that they see.  Locate the fish and you will get results.  The BIG FISH are real hungry these days after a long winter stint so they are more apt to making the foolish mistake of enhaling your offering.

Th fishing season in the High Lakes has just begun and its only gonna get better!!!  As the water and weather warm up, the Bass and the Trout will get more active throughout the day.

Lake Billy Chinook - April 15th, 2005
RECORDED:    47 °    FISHING: Great

The cold Spring weather has kept the Bull Trout feeding shallow.  Be prepared for moderate to strong winds at any given moment.  Choppy white cappy water will accompany that strong wind and you will get wet so dress appropriately.  The Kokanee are still providing plenty of availble food for the Bulls.  Yesterday, we spent some time speaking with Brett Perriman, Prineville ODFW, as they were conducting their netting sample.  Their netting sample seemed to indicate a healthy Kokanee population.  They released 10 Bull Trout in the sample as well with only 1 dying from the net.  I discussed with Brett the possibility of moving the Fishing Boundary lower in the lake this Fall to further protect the Kokanee that are entering the Metolius to spawn.  He mentioned that their studies are showing lots of 2 year old Kokanee are spawning and they are not seeing as many 3 year olds.  Lets PRAY and do all we can to maintain a healty population of Kokanee!!!  We need the Kokanee!!!

I sure hate fishing reports that just repeat the same stuff over and over.  Reminds me of those old black vinyl circle things we used to spin to listen to music..anybody remember those. Weren't they called 45s?? Didn't it drive you crazy when they would skip and you heard the same words to the song continuously!!!  Not to get off task, but Lord help me from writing fishing reports that sound that way.

Bull Trout fishing remains about as good as you could hope for.  Keep in mind though, It is fishing and some days will be better than others.  The Big Fish are still actively feeding throughout the day.  Don't be afraid to explore the lake to look for them.  One word of caution: If your expecting to catch lots of 6-12 inch trout, this isn't your type of fishing.

Gary Lewis wrote an article in Today's Bend Bulletin Sports Page about the trip he and I had the other day.  It's a good read for those who have never been exposed or experienced Bull Trout fishing in the lake.

BIG BULL TROUT is the name of the game!!!  The Big Guys are prowling around and remain Hungry.    The cooler Spring weather has kept the kokanee from dropping in the water column and the Bull Trout are right on their tails LITERALLY!!!  I can't tell you how many times we are seeing Tails of Kokanee hanging out of the throats of the Bull Trout we are landing.  Its not uncommon to pull an 11 inch Kokanee out of the mouth of a 5/6lb,  24 inch Bull Trout, sometimes several Kokanee.   They are eating bait nearly 1/2 their size.  Lately, we have been landing more 12-20inch Bull Trout as well.

If you have no interest in landing BIG FISH, read another report.  If it doesn't matter to you what size fish is on the other end of your line, STOP reading now.  If you worry about losing fishing tackle due to razor sharp teeth slicing through your line, read something else.

HOWEVER , if landing and releasing BIG BRUTES is right up your alley,  Finish reading this report and then get the heck out on the Lake!!!  It doesn't get any better for these bruisers.  They are Hungry right now!!  The winter weather we experienced over the last week is finally beginning to improve. The fishing has followed the weather.  Our tirp today saw over 10 Bull Trout between 6-12lbs come to hand.  It actually felt like March again out there too rather than late January.  With the fishing and weather this superb,  there's no excuse to be anywhere else!!!!

BIIGG TORRROOSS!!!!    The BIG BULL TROUT are out in force.  They are prowling around looking to ravage anything that resembles their favorite meal, Mr $ Mrs. Kokanee.  If having the opportunity to hook into Trout that AVG. 5-10lbs with the real chance at one over 20lbs. gets your blood rate soaring,  NOW IS THE TIME  to get out on the water!!!!
