FISHING: Great
The warmer weather has definitely spurred on the bug hatches. The Rainbows have now started milling around looking for food. Although the callibaetis aren't really going yet, the midges are out in full force. Many of the lakes are experiencing great hatches of midges and the Rainbows are keying in on them. Expect the Callibaetis to start showing up in good numbers in the coming weeks on our lower elevation waters. Ah yes, Trout fishing season has finally kicked in on the Cascades!!

BASS
Crane and Davis continue to be the hot spots for Bass fishing!!! This unseasonably HOT weather has gotten the Bass ready for the Spawn which should be happening pretty soon. At Crane this week, we had more than a few Big Sowbellys follow their potential male suitors to the boat. Davis continues to produce some REALLY BIG Northern Strain Largemouths. Its truly incredible to see the avg size of those fish. However, the fishing is getting tougher to be sure. Water has cleared and Bass tend to get very jittery in shallow clear water.
TROUT
The trout fishing hasn't really gotten fully in gear yet. East and Lava lakes are now ice free and accessable. East is likely a better bet than Lava right now but Lava will catch up once the water warms a tad and the bug activity picks up. Although we have landed Rainbows on Crane already this year, it needs a little more time too to kick into high gear for the Rainbows. A week or so more of this Hot weather will definitely jumpstart the Rainbows into feeding with reckless abandon!!!

DAVIS LAKE...The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY:
The GOOD--Bass fishing for 3-6LB+ Bucketmouths had been as good as one could wish the last few weeks.
The BAD--The Bass fishing has slowed dramatically from its torrid pace. The easy Spring fishing is past. The Bass fishing pressure has been rather heavy and many., many Bass have been hauled out of the lake in the last month. A few weeks ago, 20-40+ Bass days were common. Now you may have to work hard to land a dozen.
The UGLY--Haven't seen many trout. Hoping for the best but it doesn't appear that a decent trout population remains. It is highly likely that the lake will need to be restocked with larger trout in order for it to become a viable trout fishery again. On a positive note, it looks like the Bass have gone through the chub population rather dramatically just like they did in Crane. This would bode well for a healthy survival rate when trout were reintroduced in the lake as long as they were stocked at a minimum 6-8 inch size to escape Bass predation and the lake retained enough water for the trout to escape throughout the whole lake. With a combination of larger trout restocking and enough water, Davis Trophy Trout fishery should return quickly!!
IMPORTANT Reminder: Davis is FLY FISHING ONLY!!! Kindly remind anyone that may not be following the rules.

FISHING: Fair
Most of these lakes are still inacessable. Timing is everything in life. If you can hit a lake within a few days of ice-off, the fishing could be incredible especially for the Brookies. They will be very hungry and eager to chase down your fly!! The warmer weather coming this week will improve the thawing process on our lakes.

EN FUEGO!!!!...AS GOOD AS IT GETS!!!...ADD YOUR OWN FAVORITE CLICHE
Bottom line: It's the best its likely to be this year RIGHT NOW!!! The fishing had been relatively slow this year in comparison to the last few years. But the water has finally bumped up a bit and the BIG BULLS are plain nutty. To give a reference, On fire for Billy Chinnook means landing 6-15 Bull Trout per day in the 5-15lb range. THAT'S GOOD!!!
The High lakes are still very cold and many frozen over or not accessable. Let them thaw out and warm up. Don't miss the Hottest fishing going on because it won't last too much longer!!!

Spring is here...No it's not, it's snowing...Yes it is, it's 55 degrees today...Nope woke up to 3 inches of snow in the morning. Get my drift? Its been a cold, wet spring to say the least. It's great for our Central Oregon Waters in the long run, but man are most of us that live in CO tired of the white stuff!!!
The Bull trout have started to get much more active. Water temps are still on the colder side but they have improved enough to spur more activity in the local predators. One tip: a good sign that the Bull Trout are active and feeding: they cough up fillets of Kokanee when you are battling them.

Isn't it March??? Why do I see gigantic snow flakes falling?? Temperatures certainly haven't reacted like its Spring yet. Someone has forgotten to tell Mother Nature its March not January. Why the rant on the cold weather?? Besides being ready for Spring after this Snow filled winter, the water temps haven't been able to bounce up much from their winter levels and this has had a dampening impact on the bite.
This years openers was certainly not as robust on the bite as years past. The colder water temps are certainly playing a role in the slower action. Rumor has it that this may be the last COLD storm blowing through this Spring. Lets all pray that is the case. A week or so of good weather should greatly improve things!!

Since the weather has been pretending to be Spring-Like, we have been taking full advantage of it by chasing those nasty Bull Trout. Water temps are still a tad on the chilly side so you need to get your stuff pretty much right on top of these fellas to get them interested. When you do find them, they are definitely in the smash and inhale mode. When the Metolius Arm opens on Mar.1, the lake will provide even more abundant opportunities to wrestle with these prowling predators.

FISHING: Excellent
Everyone seems to have their own defintions of great fishing; therefore, fishing success can be a very relative term depending upon the expectations of the one giving the report. Many fisherman may consider a Trout over 20 inches to be a BIG Trout others may not. There again, the term BIG trout may be relative to the body of water being fished.
On Crane, we like to define BIG Trout when they start being thought of in POUNDS, not inches. For us, Trout in Crane are just starting to get BIG once they have broken the 5 pound threshold. Crazy as it may seem, Crane Rainbows aren't truly considered Monsterous until they start breaking the double digit range. We realize that may be difficult for most trout anglers to comprehend.
Needles to say, those are no ordinary standards to live up too. However, Crane has been more than willing to live up to these standards over the last weeks. In fact, we have seen many more than one of our clients jaws' drop as a MONSTER RAINBOW jumps 3 feet out of the water.
If you too like to measure your fishing success for Trout in POUNDS not inches, We suggest Crane is a place you should be!!!!
