Pebble Beach...Pinehurst...Why do golfers pay hundreds of dollars per round to play theses famous courses? Is it the courses storied past or its scenic beauty? Is it perhaps to test ones skills on courses where the Big Boys like Tiger roam? Heck, if one can shoot a sub par game on the same course Tiger does, then maybe, just maybe, they have a glimmer of hope that one day they too can play like a pro. Ah yes, the challenge!! Why do we challenge ourselves? Do challenges help point out areas that need improvement or growth? Can they help breathe new life into what might turn into the ordinary or mundane? Would Tiger maintain the same enthusiasm for golf if he only played par 3 courses? Can challenges help gauge current abilities? Why do golfers keep score when they are playing for fun? How do fisherman challenge themselves? How fun would fishing be if you knew how big and how many fish were going to be caught every outing? Why don't fisherman who have the available finances strictly fish private lakes and rivers where the fishing success is all but guaranteed? Why isn't it the same thrill to land the largest fish of ones life in private waters as public waters? Ever experienced the challenge of Dry Fly fishing? Droves of fly fisherman relish the chance to fool a fish on the dry. Why do their hearts start beating faster when they see a small head lift up from the water and sip in their size 20 Blue Wing Olive? Why will their hearts nearly stop when they toss a big nasty rubber legged stimulator under the low overhanging branches only to see an explosion on their fly? These fisherman usually know full well they aren't likely to catch the largest fish in the water fishing the dry. They are also all too familiar with the delicate presentation skills required to enjoy repeated success fooling the advisary with the dry. So why then do many dry fly fisherman knowingly put themselves in the position of having to make precise casts and presentations for usually smaller sized fish?? Ever fished Streamers? Most of my fishing hours are spent looking for that chance to hook those fish that are trying to eat anything and everything that dares swim to close. Why does the blood start racing when the sound of a twenty pound boulder crashing through the water is heard within casting distance? Could it signal that somebody BIG is lurking nearby and they aren't the least bit worried about expending some energy at this moment? In fact, more than likely, they are trying to engulf someone right now and few things are as certain in fishing as an active, hungry fish being the one that is most likely to make the mistake of wrapping their jaws around what is about to be thrown at them. Why then do streamer fisherman knowingly spend time fishing for potentially fewer overall fish and even fewer overall bites? Ah yes indeed, The Challenge! Are we enjoying ourselves and having fun in our sports? Heck, most aren't likely playing on the PGA Tour like Tiger, with the pressure of making that Eagle for Millions of dollars. Let's not get too carried away out there that we loose the joy in the sport. If things are starting to get stale, ordinary or dare we say Boring, Challenge yourself! It's ok to hit a few in the water hazard going for that hole in one. It's not a sin to break off your dry fly on an overexcited hook set just as your fly gets demolished. Don't beat yourself up when you break off and loose that 12 pound Rainbow that now has you thrity yards into your backing. Shake it off after you just botched the hookset on likely the largest Brown you will ever encounter as he was desparately trying to engulf your streamer. It's OKAY. It's far better to have Challenged yourself and grown than to have never grown at all!!! |
